Dear Friends,
AORTA SPECIAL ISSUE FOCUSED ON AORTIC SUMMIT 2021
AORTA (The Official Journal of the Aortic Institute at Yale-New Haven Hospital) in collaboration with the Aortic Association is pleased to announce an AORTA Special Issue focused on the Aortic Summit 2021.
AORTA has been a voice of current aortic practice, trends, and evidence since its inception in 2013. Similarly, the Aortic Association has been the propeller of evolution, innovation, and reflective aortic practice confluent on evidence globally. The content of this Special Issue includes topics highlighted and debated at the Aortic Summit 2021.
HOW AI WILL TRANSFORM AORTIC SURGERY
The concept of Artificial Intelligence (AI) was introduced in the 1920s and currently, it is rapidly evolving and has been integrated into aortic surgery clinical practice. AI has evolved from basic image-based analysis into complex decision-making tools. It has been very widely used in the field of cardiology and oncology; however, the use of such machine-led decisions has been limited and explored at a slower pace in surgical practice. As such, AI in cardiac surgery is still in its infancy and will need to be researched and well established to reflect the dynamic changes required for better patient outcomes and cost-effective management. The machine-led but human-controlled algorithms will soon be taking over most of the decision-making processes in aortic surgery. Therefore, the future of such technology-led decision-making pathways on patient outcomes, surgeon’s learning skills, and adaptability will need to be explored further. If you are interested in posting your research brief or idea, please do not hesitate to get in touch via mailings@aorticassociation.com. We at the Aortic Association would like to get you involved in disseminating your research and innovative ideas.
THE IMPORTANCE OF CASE BASED LEARNING
Surgical care-related education is currently changing. Aortic surgeons and educators have realized that the ultimate platform to abridge learning is not only in the operating theatre but also through structured frameworks as Case Based Learning & Discussion (CBLD). There is not a set definition for CBLD, however, the goal remains focused i.e. to prepare and cultivate the minds of practicing surgeons to deal with different scenarios and volatile situations. The process entails a discussion of problem identification, potential approaches, clinical decision framework based on authentic, real-life clinical cases. This would be debated and critically appraised by an invited panel, academically driven discussion and learning prospect. It links theory to practice, through the application of knowledge to the cases, using inquiry-based learning methods”. Besides the importance of providing seminars and congresses aimed at advancing the standard of the therapy of aortic diseases, it is also important to discuss the challenges that physicians and the medical community face on a daily basis and to share experiences. As such, the Aortic Association is extremely proud to take lead of this initiative and is in the final stages of shaping a number interactive cases. Dates of the first case-based discussion learning will be shared shortly and we do hope you will join us. If you have interesting cases that you would like to share with us, please do not hesitate to get in touch via mailings@aorticassociation.com
